George Gill is set to be co-opted to take the seat of the late Fianna Fáil Councillor Patrick Gerard Murphy, who passed away last September.

The Caheragh native was selected at a Bantry LEA party convention in the Maritime Hotel in Bantry on Friday, January 9, having won the vote against former Councillor Danny Crowley by 55 to 48 votes.

Mr Gill will be co-opted to Cork County Council during the full council meeting on Monday, January 12.

George who narrowly missed out on securing a seat in the 2019 Local Election said he will give his all to live up to the level of service that was provided by the late Cllr Patrick Gerard Murphy. “On November 2, 2018, I was selected to run alongside Cllr Patrick Gerard Murphy (RIP). It was a poignant moment on Friday night when I was selected to replace Patrick Gerard at Cork County Council to represent the Bantry LEA.

“I will give my all to live up to the level of service that Patrick Gerard showed during his time at Cork County Council. Many thanks to all those that have sent well wishes and messages. Thank you to Deputy Seamus McGrath for chairing the convention and Minister Christopher O’Sullivan and Senator Margaret Murphy O’Mahony for attending,” he added.

Fianna Fáil TD for Cork South Central Seamus McGrath extended his congratulations to Mr Gill following his victory over Adrigole native Danny Crowley. “Congratulations to George on being selected for the co-option to Cork County Council in the Bantry LEA. The vacancy occurred after the untimely passing of Patrick Gerard Murphy and George will now take up this position at County Hall. Well done to Danny Crowley for also seeking the nomination. It was great to have an energetic contest with two very credible candidates.”
